Rhodes
is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands with an area of 1,400 square
kilometres and is situated in the south-eastern corner of the sparkling
Aegean Sea. Dodecanese means 12 islands but in fact there are nearly 200
although many are uninhabited. Rhodes has a thriving economy based mainly,
of course, on tourism and has excellent transportation links with the
other smaller Dodecanese Islands including Symi, Karpathos, Kassos, Halki,
Kos, Kalimnos, Leros and Patmos. In addition it is a short 40 minute
flight from Athens during which views of other islands including the
spectacular crescent shaped volcanic crater that is Santorini can be
enjoyed.
The airport, which presently has a brand
new terminal under construction, is situated on the northwest coast around
a 15 minute drive from the capital, Rhodes Town, and, thanks to the
recently opened connecting road, Lindos can be reached in 40 minutes.
From April to October the airport is served
by countless charter flights from the U.K., Italy, Germany, Holland &
Scandinavia whilst in the winter months EasyJet, British Airways &
Olympic Airways fly to the new state of the art Athens airport daily with
frequent connections to Rhodes. For the canny traveller winter flights
with EasyJet from Luton or Gatwick can be as low as £11.99 each way plus
taxes !!
